Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin was born 18 December 1878 in Gori, Georgia and died 5 March 1953. Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union for over two decades. He was trying to modernize Russia and help to defeat Nazism. Stalin ruled up until his own death in 1953. He was known as a brutal leader who was responsible for the deaths of over 20 million people. Stalin s parents were poor and he had a rough childhood. He later went to become a priest in a Georgian Orthodox Church, but, he was expelled for being a radical. After leaving the Georgian Orthodox Church, Stalin joined up with the Bolshevik revolutionaries. They were an underground group that followed the communist writings of Karl Marx and were led by Vladimir Lenin. Stalin became a leader within the Bolsheviks. He led riots and strikes and raised money by robbing banks and other crimes. Stalin became one of Lenin s top leaders. When he was in his 30s, he took the name Stalin, from the Russian for man of steel. In 1906, Stalin married Ekaterina Svanidze. The couple had one son, Yakov 1907-1943 who died as a prisoner in Germany during World War II. Ekaterina died from typhus when her son was an infant. In 1918 Stalin married Nadezhda Alliluyeva, the daughter of a Russian revolutionary. They had two children, a boy and a girl. Nadezhda committed suicide in her early 30s. In 1917, the Russian Revolution took place.
